Sedation Dentistry Overview
If you are afraid of the dentist, or have a very low tolerance for any type of discomfort, you may have been putting off having dental work done. This is not a good idea, since if you neglect your oral health now, you will almost certainly end up needing extensive treatments later on. Additionally, poor oral health is linked to other health issues like strokes, kidney disease and heart disease. So, if the thought of visiting the dentist makes you quake in your shoes, you need to know about sedation dentistry.
Who Benefits from Sedation Dentistry?
As we just mentioned, if you fear the dentist or your pain tolerance is low, you will benefit from sedation dentistry. You can also benefit if you are resistant to local anesthetics, have an easily-triggered gag reflex, pain in your jaw, neck or back, or if you find it difficult to stay in one position for any length of time.
Are There Different Types of Sedation Dentistry?
Yes. Many people think that sedation dentistry means that you will be asleep during dental treatment, but the reality is that hardly any dental treatments require this level of sedation. That said, though, at Dental Arts & Wellness in Lake Oswego, we do have a general anesthesiologist on staff.
Sedation dentistry can also be facilitated using nitrous oxide or an intravenous sedative. Neither of these methods will put you to sleep. You will, however, feel totally relaxed and comfortable, and not the least bit apprehensive.
Sedation dentistry can also be delivered in pill form.
Are There Disadvantages to Sedation Dentistry?
Some patients report mild side effects like dry mouth, nausea or hiccups. The main disadvantage to sedation dentistry, though, is that it can result in a bit of an inconvenience. You will not be able to drive home after your appointment, so you will need to arrange for a taxi, or for a friend or family member to take you to and from your appointment. For the apprehensive patient, though, the benefits of sedation dentistry far outweigh the disadvantages.
