Dental Implants – Fitting and Receiving Artificial Tooth Roots

Dental implants are titanium posts that are fastened directly to the jawbone. Atop these posts, abutments are secured to anchor dental restorations such as crowns and bridges. The implants offer a stable, long-term solution to missing teeth, and provide all of the benefits afforded by natural teeth. Dental implants are particularly durable as a result of two factors: their titanium construction and their placement directly into the jawbone. Through a process known as osseointegration, the bone tissue fuses around the inert metal of the implant. In effect, the implant becomes part of the body, providing unparalleled support for dental prosthetics.

The Placement Process

The placement process for dental implants is multi-staged. Once it’s been determined that your jaw has sufficient bone density to place an implant, a treatment plan will be devised. Placing the implants requires oral surgery; however, the procedure will be completed under local or general anesthesia for your comfort, and you will not feel any pain. To begin, incisions will be made in the gum tissue and a small pilot hole will be drilled into the jawbone. Once the pilot hole has been made, the dental implant will be screwed into the jawbone. Over the course of several months, the treatment area will heal and the bone will fuse to the implant.

Once the dental implant is firmly rooted, you will return to our Lake Oswego dental practice to have the dental restoration attached. Dental crowns, dental bridges, and dentures can all be secured atop dental implants. The restorations attach to the implant by way of an abutment, and restore the oral health of the mouth.

Risks and Benefits

Though the placement of dental implants is a routine procedure, all surgeries, including oral surgeries, carry inherent risk. However, these risks can be mitigated through experience, skill, care, and a conservative treatment approach. That being said, risks include excessive bleeding, infection, improper placement of the implant, and rejection of foreign materials, and these should be taken into consideration by individuals considering dental implants. During your consultation at our Lake Oswego dental office, we will be sure to educate you on possible risks so that you can make an informed decision.

The benefits of dental implants are wide-ranging. Implants provide a stable and long-lasting solution for tooth loss, help prevent the deterioration of jawbone material, prevent surrounding teeth from shifting out of position toward the gap, and eliminate complications stemming from missing teeth, such as speech impediments and chewing difficulties. Many of our patients find that they experience a greatly improved quality of life.
