Dental Crowns

Though minor dental imperfections may be treatable through direct restorations or the placement of porcelain veneers, more advanced decay requires a more comprehensive solution. We offer dental crowns at our Lake Oswego dental practice to treat teeth that are severely decayed or damaged. As part of our commitment to providing our patients with lifelong wellness and beauty, we strive to find solutions which are both aesthetically pleasing and functional. Dental crowns restore the health, appearance, and function of damaged teeth, improving not only oral health, but whole body health as well. A dental crown is a tooth-shaped restoration made from porcelain. Because crowns fully encapsulate damaged or decayed teeth, they are sometimes referred to as “caps.” With proper maintenance, dental crowns can last for years, and they fully restore the functionality and appearance of damaged and decayed teeth, making them an attractive treatment option. In most cases, crowns provide an ideal solution for the treatment and preservation of teeth that would otherwise require extraction.
To place a dental crown, the affected tooth must first be prepared for the restoration. Decayed or damaged material is removed, and the tooth is reshaped so that it can accommodate the prosthetic. Because the dental crown must sit flush with surrounding teeth, the underlying tooth must be filed down slightly. Once the tooth has been reshaped, a process which is completed with local anesthesia, an impression is taken of the mouth. This impression allows the restoration to be designed and fabricated. To protect the modified tooth, a temporary crown will be placed.
Once the permanent dental crown is complete, you will return to our dental office to have your temporary prosthetic replaced. The dental crown will be secured in place with dental cement, creating a solid foundation for the crown and preventing it from coming loose. Once we place the dental crown at our Lake Oswego office, we’ll advise you on ways to help ensure that the restoration stays in place.
There are few risks to placing dental crowns. However, it is important to understand that the affected tooth will be permanently reshaped, and the process cannot be reversed. Though dental crowns can be replaced, they cannot be permanently removed, as it would compromise the health and strength of the tooth. The benefits afforded by dental crowns, on the other hand, are many. Through the use of crowns, the health of the mouth can be restored, improving quality of life and boosting self-esteem and confidence.
